EchoCG (echocardiography) – ultrasound examination of the heart – is a non-invasive diagnostic manipulation.
It is performed without damage to the skin and without special preparation of the patient. EchoCG makes it possible to diagnose heart diseases. Since non-invasive diagnostics is considered one of the priority areas of medical examinations, it is difficult to imagine modern cardiology without this method.
EchoCG allows you to assess the anatomy and functions of the heart, that is, to see and measure the dimensions of the walls and chambers of the heart, to find out the condition of the heart valves and the contractility of different walls of the heart, as well as with the help of a special function – dopplerography – to assess the speed of blood flow through vessels or through valve structures of the heart, determine the direction of blood flows and measure blood pressure gradients on the corresponding heart structures.
Most often, performing an EchoCG requires:
- ischemic heart disease (myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, post-infarction cardiosclerosis, painless myocardial ischemia);
- valve defects;
- cardiomyopathy;
- aneurysms of various locations;
- infectious endocarditis;
- pericarditis;
- arterial hypertension;
- intracardiac thrombi and tumors, etc.
Echocardiography is needed not only for diagnosing the disease, but also for choosing treatment tactics and evaluating its results.
Echocardiography in asymptomatic or low-symptomatic patients (including young people) is an important method of identifying a cardiac problem with the aim of its complete elimination, and an early diagnosis of the disease gives an opportunity to prevent the occurrence of serious complications.
