What do you need to know about osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become so fragile that even a fall or slight exertion (even such as a cough) can cause a fracture. Or when you’re having back pain due to compression fractures of the vertebrae, deformation of the spine becomes noticeable – «dowager's hump», a decrease in height.
Why does this happen?
Bone is a living tissue that is constantly renewed – new bone tissue is formed, old one is destroyed. At a young age, our body forms them faster, but after 20 years this process slows down. We reach the peak of bone mass at 30, and with each subsequent year we gradually lose it.
In addition to age, a number of factors affect the rate of bone loss:
- early menopause;
- long-term breastfeeding;
- menstrual irregularities;
- alimentary factors;
- smoking;
- excessive consumption of alcohol;
- insufficient physical activity;
- endocrine disorders (hyperthyroidism, hypercorticism, diabetes, hypogonadism, hyperparathyroidism, pituitary disease);
- long-term medicine use (glucocorticoids, heparin, methotrexate, antacids);
- diseases of digestive organs;
- kidney diseases;
- anemia;
- malignant diseases;
- chronic inflammatory diseases;
- infections.
