Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of death in Ukraine.
A stroke is an acute disruption of cerebral blood circulation, as a result of which a part of the brain is damaged. A stroke is most often a complication of hypertension and occurs amid a sharp increase in blood pressure.
There are two types of stroke:
- hemorrhagic, caused by rupture of a cerebral artery;
- ischemic, when an artery that supplies blood to the brain is blocked by a blood clot or spasms.
The following symptoms usually occur during a stroke:
- a person cannot smile, while the corner of the lips is lowered;
- the person cannot speak normally – the speech is indecipherable and confused;
- the person cannot raise their arms up or one arm is too weak and does not move;
- there is weakness or numbness in the right or left side of the trunk and limbs.
If you notice at least one of these symptoms, especially after an episode of high blood pressure, contact a medical facility immediately!
